Review article: practical guidance on steroid induced hyperglycaemia (SIHG) in in-hospital care — prevalence, diagnosis, monitoring, and treatment.
Key ideas in my own words
- Glucocorticoids are the drug class at highest risk of causing hyperglycaemia:
they cut insulin sensitivity, ramp up hepatic gluconeogenesis, and blunt pancreatic insulin production. - Up to 70% of inpatients without known diabetes develop in-hospital hyperglycaemia on relevant GC doses — it’s common, not an edge case.
- SIHG worsens outcomes (incl. mortality) but formal treatment targets and guidelines are lacking, so the paper offers practical recommendations instead.
How it connects
